This screen cap was taken a few days ago, so the project has progressed a significant amount – enough to say we’ve probably got a pretty solid rough cut. Can’t wait until we start to color this monster! We shot about 4.5 hours of footage and need to condense it to about 12 minutes. Moving every thing into the Avid was an adventure. The workflow seems pretty smooth once every thing is transcoded from the camera card. Not quick though - takes about 2.3x the duration of an individual clip to import. For this project, I’m a fan of the Avid DNxHD 175 X codec. Looks gorgeous.

Here’s a fresh photo from my man James Biscardi. Royal Street in Mobile, Alabama, that is. Since this is our second visit, we’ll be wrapping up all of the content that we need to get so we can start cutting the picture sometime next week. My man Drew Epp did a killer job, and naturally the entire process was documented on our Canon 7D. I’ve been bringing the footage into Avid these past two days and it looks amazing. I can’t wait until I start cutting it. We’ll have a complete release of the documentary done the first week in March - scored, colored, and spiced up with a little bit of Royal Street flavor.

This was a cut I put together using Avid Symphony with footage...

This was a cut I put together using Avid Symphony with footage from the 2009 horror film Red Velvet. So what’s on the plate?

A new project that I’m really looking forward to doing is a documentary me and a few other people are going to be working on in Mobile, Alabama. The film is going to be a portrait of a small (but very stylish) tattoo shop called Royal Street Tattoo. Shooting is scheduled to take place the weekends of January 29th and February 12th. Should be a fun little road trip, and once I get all of our footage cut, I might be able to get some short clips online for your viewing pleasure.

Other projects include two short films that I’ll be cutting in the Spring and Summer. Good stories, good people - couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming months.

I recently just cut this simple portrait piece together for a...

I recently just cut this simple portrait piece together for a friend. The truth is, I’ve been working pretty hard on getting some things cleared up for the coming months. By things, I mean revamping my resumè, designing some new business cards, and working on putting together my latest and (what would be right now) greatest pieces of demo-reel material. Why all the work? Well, back in December I was given the opportunity to attend the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in France. Opportunities like this usually present themselves on a pretty rare basis, so I jumped on it.

Since this is one of the biggest events I’ve attended to date, I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row. Not only that, but I got to get them quacking, and quacking loud. I’ve been doing some researching on the festival just to see what I’ll be getting in to. If I could describe my excitement, I would, but words wouldn’t do the feeling justice. I’ll be in France from May 8th to May 25th, and I’m going to do my best to document my entire trip and hopefully come back with a lot to work with.

Even though my updates here have been slow, expect to see some more work very soon, as it’s that season again. Keep it real!

In continuing the path to becoming a visual artist, I believe...

In continuing the path to becoming a visual artist, I believe it’s important to stay honest about what we do. Without mistakes, anxiety, and criticism, we could never improve our methods of visual storytelling. In the end, what keeps us honest is recognizing our mistakes and learning from them.

This most recent short, Paper Airplanes, was an exercise for a directing class. The film was shot completely guerrilla in a total of about 6 hours. I cut the film in a day, and the editing leaves a little to be desired. Unfortunately, I had to direct this picture, as well. As a fan of the great Walter Murch, I think it could have turned out better had I been more separated from my directing mind. I’m happy with the way the shots came out, but Bryce Milburn always delivers those tasty compositions! Much thanks to Ryan McCardle and Whitney Summerall and every one else who was able to lend a helping hand! Òlafur Arnalds has some awesome ear candy worth checking out; his music helped deliver the story nicely.

Here’s the latest flavor from the Slayin’ Together...

Here’s the latest flavor from the Slayin’ Together set. We just wrapped shooting today, and we’re working on going into some heavy postproduction. The shoot went well, and the photos are just a little preview as to what’s coming in the early first quarter of 2010. The story is brought to you by Andrew Melzer and Jeff Soulliere. Bryce Milburn DP’ed the episode. I have been working to produce and have already started to cut the picture. I’ll be using Final Cut for this one… but that won’t stop the dreams of getting Avid 4.

A big thanks to every one who’s been able to get this thing off the ground!
